OPEN WATER COURSE ON KOH TAO

Start your Open Water Course even before you arrive by completing the theory online through our app or browser. The theory portion is a key part of your SCUBA lessons on Koh Tao, covering essential topics like SCUBA equipment, safe diving practices, and understanding the underwater environment. The theory is divided into six manageable sections that you can study at your own pace.

We recommend finishing at least the first three sections before your initial pool dive, with the rest completed before your open water dives. Most students find it helpful to complete most of the theory before arriving on Koh Tao.

When you arrive at Crystal Dive, you’ll meet your instructor for an orientation and review all necessary paperwork. You’ll also have an in-person theory session to cover key points and answer any questions. This ensures a thorough understanding, setting you up for a safe and unforgettable diving experience.

Once you’ve completed at least three chapters of theory, it’s time to put that knowledge into practice. During this stage of your Open Water Course, your instructor will guide you through real-life diving scenarios and answer any questions you might have.

Your SCUBA lessons on Koh Tao begin in the safety of our resort swimming pool, where you’ll learn essential diving skills and safety procedures. You’ll start in shallow water, taking your first breaths underwater, before progressing to deeper water. Here, you’ll practice skills like buoyancy control and swimming underwater—feeling the thrill of weightlessness for the first time.

At Crystal Dive, we know everyone learns at their own pace. That’s why there’s no strict time limit on pool training—whether you need a few hours or a full day, you’ll get the time you need to build confidence and master your skills. And the best part? There’s no extra charge for taking your time.

Now it’s time for the real adventure—taking your beginner SCUBA course on Koh Tao into the ocean! Once you’ve completed your online learning and pool training, you’re ready to enjoy the highlight of the Open Water Course: your open water dives.

You’ll complete four dives over two half-days, starting with two dives to a maximum depth of 12 meters (40 feet). This is your chance to practice your skills and experience the underwater world in all its glory. The final two dives take you to a maximum of 18 meters (60 feet), where you’ll prove your ability to dive independently of a professional.

You don’t need to be an athlete or in peak physical shape to join the Open Water Course on Koh Tao. All you need is a sense of adventure and the willingness to try something new!

It’s helpful if you feel generally at ease in the water and have basic swimming skills. During your beginner SCUBA course on Koh Tao, you’ll complete a short swim test: floating or treading water for 10 minutes and swimming 200 meters unaided.
