Theory
The theory section of the Divemaster course covers several essential topics to prepare you for the responsibilities and leadership roles of a Divemaster. Here’s what’s involved:
1. Dive Theory
- Physics of Diving: Understand the fundamental principles of how pressure, buoyancy, and gas laws (like Boyle’s Law and Dalton’s Law) affect divers. This includes the effects of depth on the body and how to manage pressure-related issues.
- Physiology of Diving: Learn how diving affects the body, including the respiratory and circulatory systems, and how to manage the risks of nitrogen narcosis, oxygen toxicity, and decompression sickness.
- Dive Tables & Computers: Study dive tables (or dive computers) to understand no-decompression limits, dive time, and safety stops. You’ll also learn how to plan multi-level and repetitive dives.
2. Dive Equipment
- Equipment Types and Functions: Understand the function and maintenance of standard diving equipment (e.g., mask, fins, regulator, BCD, wetsuit/drysuit, tanks, etc.), and how to assist divers with gear problems.
- Troubleshooting: Learn how to handle common equipment failures and how to guide divers in managing and resolving issues underwater.
3. Dive Planning
- Dive Site Management: Learn how to plan dives, assess dive sites, and consider environmental factors (such as currents, visibility, and wildlife) that affect dive safety.
- Buddy System: Understand the importance of the buddy system and how to evaluate dive fitness and capabilities for all members of the dive team.
- Risk Management: Study risk assessment and emergency procedures to ensure safety before, during, and after dives.
4. Leadership Skills
- Assisting Instructors: Learn how to assist during training, including managing groups, supervising skills, and ensuring safety during student dives.
- Guiding Certified Divers: Study the responsibilities of guiding certified divers on recreational dives, including dive briefings, underwater communication, and managing diver behavior.
- Emergency Procedures: Learn how to handle emergency situations, including emergency oxygen administration, rescues, and accident management.
5. Environmental Awareness
- Marine Life and Ecosystems: Understand the importance of marine conservation, how to identify key species, and how to interact with the underwater environment responsibly.
- Sustainable Diving Practices: Learn the principles of minimizing your environmental impact while diving and promoting responsible diving practices to others.
6. Theory Tests and Quizzes
- Throughout the course, you’ll complete various written exams and quizzes to assess your understanding of dive theory, safety protocols, and the practical aspects of leading dives and managing dive groups.
7. Dive Shop and Business Operations
- Covering basic dive shop operations or customer service skills, especially if you’re planning to work in a professional dive setting.
The theory section ensures you’re equipped with the scientific knowledge, safety protocols, and leadership abilities needed to assist instructors, guide divers, and manage dive activities effectively.
Training Workshops
The Divemaster course includes several hands-on workshops designed to develop your practical skills in diving leadership, safety management, and dive supervision. These workshops focus on specific tasks and scenarios you will encounter as a Divemaster, preparing you to assist instructors and lead certified divers effectively.
Divemaster Supervision Workshop
- Guiding Certified Divers: This workshop focuses on the skills required to guide certified divers on recreational dives. You’ll practice giving briefings, managing dive groups, monitoring diver safety, and maintaining good communication with divers during the dive.
- Dive Site Management: You will learn how to assess dive sites for safety, manage environmental factors (like currents, visibility, and weather), and handle unexpected challenges during the dive.
Dive Planning Workshop
- Dive Planning and Briefing: In this workshop, you’ll develop the ability to plan and conduct dives, taking into account diver experience levels, environmental conditions, and safety considerations. You’ll practice creating dive plans and presenting dive briefings to groups of divers.
- Risk Management: Learn how to evaluate dive risks, assess the physical and mental readiness of divers, and adjust dive plans as necessary to minimize risk. This may include monitoring air consumption, depth, and dive times.
Underwater Navigation Workshop
- Navigation Skills: You’ll practice advanced navigation techniques, such as underwater compass navigation and natural navigation (using environmental cues). This is a critical skill for guiding dives safely and efficiently.
- Navigation for Groups: In this workshop, you’ll learn to navigate with a group of divers, ensuring the group stays together, follows the planned dive path, and returns to the entry point safely.
Course Assists
- Assisting with Student Training: You’ll practice assisting instructors in teaching diving skills. This includes supervising students during confined water training and helping them master essential scuba skills.
- Instructor Mentorship: While not strictly a “workshop,” as part of your Divemaster training, you’ll spend time shadowing and assisting SSI instructors during training sessions. This hands-on experience is invaluable in learning how to lead and manage groups of divers, observe instructor techniques, and apply your knowledge in real-life settings.
