DIVE AGAINST DEBRIS SPECIALTY ON KOH TAO
Learn to safely remove and collect research data on trash underwater to help protect our oceans!
The Dive Against Debris Course will teach you to about the threats of trash in our oceans to the marine ecosystem. You will also plan scuba dives to remove underwater debris and learn the decision making process to only remove certain items to protect the environment.
This project collects data and categorizes the trash that you will also collect on your dives with your Marine Conservation Instructor.
The data that you collect will be reviewed and uploaded to a global database, with data available for public viewing.
This data can be used for scientific research, or to push for changes in regulations by governments to reduce debris in our oceans and protect our ocean inhabitants.
You will be accompanied and instructed at your own pace by one of our Marine Conservation Specialist Instructors, who will teach you from the beginning to the end to get your Dive Against Debris Diver Specialty so you can begin to protect and preserve our ocean ecosystem.
This course is a great way of getting an insight into Marine Conservation!

Part 1: Theory
After an introduction between you and your Instructor you will complete the necessary paperwork before moving on to theory.
The Knowledge Development part of your Dive Against Debris Course starts by self-study with your personal copy of the manual.
These will introduce you to the issues of ocean debris and how we can help solve the huge impact of trash on oceans and marine life.
Together with your instructor you will then go over Knowledge Reviews to understand how these global issues relate to the marine ecosystem here on Koh Tao.
Part 2: Dive Against Debris Dives
For your Dive Against Debris Specialty Course, we will get on one of our 3 custom built dive boats and go out for two dives.
On these dives you will focus on searching and identifying different varieties of ocean debris, and use the knowledge that you learned earlier, to decide whether to remove or leave the ocean debris.
You will also see examples of local threats to the balance of this fragile marine ecosystem and may be introducted to other conservation activities taken by the local community and our partners, The Coral Tribe.
After your dives, we will separate the trash collected and record our findings on the Dive Against Debris slate. After this, you will record the dives dive log book and you will be a certified Dive Against Debris Diver!
